Origin from north and central Europe to Asia. As well as Betula pendula native to the UK found on moist, acidic and peaty soils. Height up to 20m. Bark is white, flaking off in thin strips. To the foot of old trees deeply grooved, soft bark. Leaves are diamond-shaped and twigs softly hairy. Upright growth habit with some drooping branches. Emerges later than Betula pendula and holds leaves longer. Mainly for landscape use (as silver birch), but on damp, peaty grounds. Also used as an avenue and park tree.
