Origin from central and eastern part of North America. Fast growing maple that under unrestricted growth can reach 20-25 m in the UK. Wide, loose crown with fanning out main branches, protruding side branches and many limply drooping twigs. Park tree for high, limestone sandy soils. Sensitive in strong wind for branch breakage. Leaves have 5 lobes, often half incised with serrated lobes and a red petiole. Top side light green, underneath silvery blue frosted.
